7/28/17 – 8/06/17
Join us for an adventure to the Pacific Northwest
aboard restored private railroad cars from the Streamliner era of passenger rail travel.
We will travel from Los Angeles, up to beautiful California Coast behind the famed Amtrak Coast Starlight, taking in daytime views of the Pacific Ocean, and catch great chef-prepared meals and restful sleep aboard our vintage rail cars. We visit Portland and venture east to Whitefish, Montana and Glacier National Park. We spend two days and nights in Whitefish and return via Seattle where we spend two nights. Back on the Coast Starlight heading south, we cross the Columbia River and return to Portland for a brief stop, then continue south to Los Angeles.
It is a wonderful way to see the majestic West Coast and Glacier National Park. Click the bar below for our detailed itinerary.
July 28—We will board the private vintage streamliners of LArail on the rear of Amtrak’s Coast Starlight at 9:45 a.m. at Los Angeles Union Station. Our eagerly awaited departure for the Northwest is scheduled for 10:10 a.m. Enjoy a mimosa or a cold beer with lunch as we glide along the beaches in Ventura and Santa Barbara. Savor the glorious views of the California coast well into the afternoon from the dome or from your private Pullman bedroom. Between the wine country of Paso Robles and the verdant farmland of the Salinas Valley, the creations of our chef will delight us at dinner.
July 29—Early risers will see Mt. Shasta as we descend from the mountain town of Dunsmuir if the skies are clear. As with every day of our trip, breakfast will be served, buffet style, in the Silver Splendor. Soon we will skirt scenic Crater Lake in southern Oregon and, after we have lunch, tiptoe along the banks of the Willamette River as we arrive in Portland. Dinner is on your own in the Rose City this evening as we spend the next two nights here. Your car owner hosts will be happy to provide some wonderful dining suggestions and your sleeper is your hotel.
July 30—Free day at your leisure in Portland.
July 31—Portland’s light rail system and streetcars make it easy to get around and many attractions are close by. Visit Powell’s, the world’s largest bookstore, or enjoy some quiet time at the beautiful Japanese Garden. The Oregon Rail History Foundation’s museum is also easily accessible on the light rail. Dramatic views of the region from the Portland Aerial Tram frequently include Mt. Rainier and do not forget the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (known to locals as OMSI). Lunch is on your own. At 4:00 p.m., we will need you to get back on board the private cars for our 4:45 p.m. departure on the Empire Builder and the fabulous ride through Columbia River Gorge. Multnomah Falls is just one of the many highlights this evening.
August 1—Around breakfast time, we will glide into Whitefish, MT and be spotted on the private spur next to the depot. Today is extra special as we board the 1930s vintage tourist buses of Red Bus Tours and take in the stunning Alpine vistas of Glacier Park. Our 4-hour adventure will take us from the valley of Lake Macdonald all the way up to the Continental Divide, where we will get out and pose for pictures. Knowledgeable guides will tell us all about the many ecosystems we will encounter on the way up and the way down on famous Going-To-The-Sun Road. We will arrange to have lunch along the way and we will return to the private cars in the late afternoon. Dinner is on your own.
August 2—After another good night’s sleep in your Pullman Berth, we have one more day in Whitefish. Consider a leisurely stroll around town to sample the local cuisine, which includes craft breweries and interesting restaurants in all price ranges. Be sure to sample some fresh Huckleberry pie. You won’t find pie like this anywhere else. Everyone will need to be back on board after dinnertime since we’re scheduled to be picked up by the westbound Empire Builder shortly before 9:00 p.m. As you settle in for the night, we will be on our way to Seattle. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
August 3—This morning will feature some gorgeous views as we meander through rain forests and the craggy coast north of Seattle. We are due to arrive at 10:25 a.m. at newly-renovated King Street Station, right next to the ballpark and a short walk to many downtown restaurants and markets. We are here for two nights so there is plenty of time to explore the waterfront’s amazing Pike Place, take an underground walking tour, visit the iconic Space Needle or catch a ballgame if the Mariners are in town. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
August 4—Ambitious travelers today might like to take Amtrak up to Vancouver, B.C. (remember, you will need an advance reservation and a passport) to visit spectacular Butchart Gardens and North America’s largest Chinatown. Options closer to town include taking a DUK boat tour, riding the numerous ferry boats on Puget Sound or a stroll through the arts district. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
August 5—We depart to the south just after breakfast at 9:45 a.m. In the early afternoon, we cross the Columbia River and stop in Portland where we can stretch our legs for a half hour or so. After we pause in Eugene, we will begin our climb into the southern Cascade Range. The entire evening will feature beautiful mountain panoramas as our train snakes its way through numerous tunnels.
August 6—Our final day begins with an early morning stop in Sacramento to water the train and to change crews. Soon after, we will be racing across Yolo Causeway on our way into the Bay Area. Vintage WWII warships will be visible on our left as we approach the massive Benicia Bridge just before our stop at Martinez. By mid afternoon, we will descend Cuesta Pass and the famous horseshoe curves just above San Luis Obispo. Dinner along the Pacific Ocean will cap off a memorable journey. Scheduled arrival in Los Angeles is 9:00 p.m.
